We all think we’re doing a decent job keeping our homes clean, but there are some sneaky spots we often miss.

These neglected areas can harbour some seriously nasty grime, and that’s no good. Here are some things you’re probably forgetting to clean, and trust me, they’re probably disgusting as a result.

1. Your remote controls are covered in bacteria.

Think about how often you touch these things. Now think about when you last cleaned them. Exactly. Remote controls are a hotbed for germs, especially if you’ve been snacking whilst channel-surfing. Give them a wipe down regularly to avoid spreading nasties.

2. Your toothbrush holder is probably disgustingly grimy.

It’s right there in your bathroom, collecting moisture and bacteria. That holder is likely harbouring more germs than you’d care to imagine. Rinse it out and give it a proper clean at least once a week. Your mouth will thank you.

3. The top of your refrigerator is a dust magnet.

Out of sight, out of mind, right? Wrong. That space up there is collecting dust, grease, and who knows what else. Next time you’re doing a deep clean, don’t forget to tackle this often-neglected surface. You might be shocked at what you find.

4. Your light switches are filthier than you think.

Everyone in the house touches these multiple times a day, but when was the last time you gave them a good clean? They’re a breeding ground for germs. A quick wipe with a disinfectant can make a world of difference.

5. The inside of your washing machine needs attention too.

Just because it cleans your clothes doesn’t mean it cleans itself. Mould and bacteria can build up, especially in the rubber seals. Run an empty hot water cycle with some vinegar or a specialised cleaner every month to keep it fresh.

6. Your computer keyboard is a crumb-filled mess.

If you’ve ever eaten at your desk (and let’s be honest, who hasn’t?), your keyboard is likely harbouring all sorts of grime between the keys. Turn it upside down for a shake, then use compressed air or a small brush to get rid of the debris.

7. The blades of your ceiling fan are dust collectors.

When was the last time you looked up there? Those blades are probably coated in a thick layer of dust. Next time you turn it on, you’ll be spreading that dust all over your room. Give them a good wipe down regularly.

8. Your doorknobs are germ hotspots.

Everyone touches them, but no one thinks to clean them. Doorknobs are prime real estate for bacteria. A quick daily wipe with a disinfectant cloth can significantly reduce the spread of germs in your home.

9. The inside of your rubbish bin is disgustingly dirty.

Sure, you change the bag, but when did you last scrub the actual bin? Food residue and liquids can build up, creating a perfect environment for bacteria and unpleasant odours. Give it a good wash every few weeks.

10. Your shower curtain is probably growing mould.

That damp environment is perfect for mould growth. Have a close look at the bottom of your shower curtain or liner. See those black spots? That’s mould. Wash it regularly or replace it if it’s too far gone. Your shower should be clean, not a health hazard.
