It’s more about small, meaningful moments that build trust. Bonding with your cat will not only make its life much happier, but yours will be richer, too. Here are surprisingly simple ways you can become your cat’s absolute favourite human.

1. Respect their space from the start.

Cats appreciate it when you don’t rush in with affection right away. Giving them the chance to approach you on their own terms shows that you respect their boundaries, which goes a long way in building trust. Instead of forcing cuddles, simply sit near them and let them make the first move. Often, doing less is what makes them curious enough to come closer, and that curiosity is the first step toward real connection.

2. Master the slow blink.

If you’ve ever caught your cat slowly blinking at you, it’s basically their version of a hug. Returning that slow blink can be a powerful way to show that you’re a friend, not a threat. Next time you’re relaxing near your cat, try meeting their gaze and slowly blinking at them. If they blink back, congratulations—you’re speaking fluent cat, and you’re one step closer to their inner circle.

3. Let them initiate physical contact.

One of the quickest ways to turn a cat off is by being too hands-on too soon. Instead, let your cat be the one to initiate touch, whether it’s a head bump, a tail wrap, or a gentle paw tap. When a cat chooses to come to you, it’s a sign they trust you, and trust is everything in a cat’s world. Respond gently, and you’ll encourage even more positive interactions in the future.

4. Offer high-value treats occasionally.

Food is a universal love language, and cats are no exception. Offering a small, tasty treat now and then can help build positive associations between you and happy experiences. Stick to healthy options and use treats thoughtfully, not constantly. A special reward when they come to sit by you or after a grooming session can make you the source of all things good in their mind.

5. Play the right way.

Interactive play taps into a cat’s natural hunting instincts and gives them an outlet for their energy. A wand toy, a laser pointer, or a feather teaser can turn you into their favourite playmate in no time. Make the play feel like a hunt—letting them stalk, chase, and “catch” the toy—and always let them win in the end. Regular play sessions help them associate you with excitement, satisfaction, and fun.

6. Create cosy spaces they can claim.

Cats love having little nooks and hideaways they can call their own. Setting up cosy spaces—a window perch, a cardboard box, or a soft bed tucked in a quiet corner—shows you’re thinking about their comfort. When a cat feels safe in your space, they start to relax around you too. It’s not about expensive gear; even a simple blanket on a sunny windowsill can make your home feel more like theirs.

7. Talk to them in a soft voice.

While they may not understand every word, cats definitely pick up on tone and energy. Talking to your cat in a calm, friendly voice can reassure them that you’re safe and predictable. Even casual chatter—saying hello when you walk into a room or narrating what you’re doing—helps build familiarity. As time goes on, they’ll recognise your voice as part of their comfort zone.

8. Groom them gently if they enjoy it.

Many cats love being brushed, but it has to be on their terms. Starting with short, gentle sessions focused on spots they already like being petted (like the head or neck) can turn grooming into a bonding ritual. Brushing helps with their coat health and mimics the social grooming cats do with each other. If they’re purring while you brush them, that’s a sure sign you’re moving up their favourites list.

9. Learn their unique body language.

Every cat has slightly different signals, and understanding them shows that you truly “get” them. Watch for things like tail flicks, ear position, and how they react to touch to learn what they love, and what they don’t. Respecting their signals, even the subtle ones, builds trust faster than anything else. The more you respond appropriately to their cues, the more confident and affectionate they’ll feel around you.

10. Stick to a routine.

Cats are creatures of habit, and they feel safest when their world is predictable. Feeding them at roughly the same times, keeping play sessions regular, and maintaining daily rituals creates a sense of stability. When your cat knows they can count on you, it builds a deeper level of attachment. Being the reliable part of their day-to-day life makes you an automatic favourite in their eyes.

11. Offer plenty of scent opportunities.

Cats use scent to mark safe spaces and beloved people. Offering items that carry your scent, like a worn T-shirt or soft blanket, can be incredibly comforting for them, especially when you’re not home. Encouraging gentle scent marking (like when they rub their face against you) is another small way to deepen your bond. It’s their way of claiming you as part of their trusted world.

12. Respect their moods.

Sometimes your cat will want to cuddle, and sometimes they’ll want nothing to do with you—and both are completely normal. Respecting their moods instead of pushing for interaction shows that you truly care about their needs. In the long run, they’ll appreciate that you’re someone who listens, not someone who demands. Cats are independent by nature, but they thrive when given the freedom to choose how and when they engage with you.

13. Celebrate the small wins.

Bonding with a cat isn’t always a big, dramatic event. It’s often made up of tiny moments — a nudge against your leg, a soft purr when you walk by, a slow, lazy blink from across the room. Notice and celebrate these small gestures, because to a cat, they’re huge. The more you appreciate the quiet ways they show love, the stronger your bond will become over time, and before you know it, you’ll be their number one human.
