Some people seem to forget that the gym is a shared space, not their personal playground.

Instead of being considerate of other members, they act as if they’re the only people there, and they can do whatever they want. If you’re guilty of any of these gym behaviours, it’s time to change your approach to fitness immediately. That, or stay home and do your workouts there.
1. Hogging equipment for too long

We’ve all seen it – someone sitting on a machine scrolling through their phone or chatting away while people wait. Spending too long on a piece of equipment, especially during peak hours, can be frustrating for those waiting their turn. Remember, other people need their time too, so keep your rest periods reasonable.
2. Not wiping down equipment after use

Leaving a sweaty mess behind on benches or machines is not only gross but inconsiderate. Most gyms provide wipes or sprays, so take a few seconds to clean up after yourself. No one wants to sit or lie down in your sweat.
3. Being too loud

Grunting loudly or dropping weights aggressively can be really distracting. While it’s normal to make some noise when you’re pushing yourself, there’s no need to go overboard. Keep the noise to a level that doesn’t make people turn their heads.
4. Using multiple pieces of equipment at once

Taking over several machines or weights at the same time might work for your circuit, but it’s frustrating for other members. If you’re not actively using a machine, let someone else get their set in while you’re between stations.
5. Standing too close to the weight racks

Blocking the weight racks while choosing or using your weights can stop other people from getting what they need. Step back once you’ve picked your weights to give everyone space to grab their own. It keeps the area less cluttered and easier for everyone to navigate.
6. Taking selfies in busy areas

Snapping a progress pic now and then is fine, but doing a full-on photoshoot in the middle of the gym can be annoying, especially if you’re blocking a mirror or machine. Try to pick quieter times or less busy spots if you’re taking pictures.
7. Not re-racking weights properly

Leaving weights scattered around the gym floor is not only annoying but also dangerous. Someone could trip over them, and it’s a hassle for everyone else to clean up your mess. Always re-rack your weights when you’re done so the space stays organised for everyone.
8. Using equipment for things it’s not meant for

Using a squat rack to do bicep curls or resting on the leg press to chat can irritate other members. Every machine has a purpose, so it’s best to stick to what they’re designed for. It helps keep the flow of the gym moving smoothly.
9. Bringing a loud or distracting group

While it’s great to have a workout buddy, bringing a group of loud friends can be disruptive. If you’re chatting loudly or crowding the equipment, it can make it hard for other people to focus on their own workout.
10. Blocking the mirrors

People often use gym mirrors to check their form, so standing directly in front of them while someone else is lifting can be frustrating. Try to stay aware of where other people are and avoid blocking their view when they’re mid-set.
11. Talking on your phone while working out

Taking a call while sitting on a machine or during your workout can be distracting to those around you. Most people come to the gym to focus, so loud phone conversations can be a big annoyance. Save the chat for later and focus on your workout instead.
12. Dropping weights unnecessarily

Lifting heavy is impressive, but slamming weights to the floor for attention is not. Dropping weights can be noisy and disruptive to other people, and it’s not great for the equipment either. Try to control your weights, and only drop them if it’s absolutely necessary.
13. Using too much perfume or cologne

A little deodorant is great, but strong scents can be overwhelming, especially in a sweaty gym. Some people are sensitive to strong smells, so keep perfumes and colognes to a minimum when you’re heading to the gym.
14. Ignoring the gym’s time limits on equipment

Many gyms set time limits for cardio machines during busy hours. Ignoring these limits can cause tension, especially when people are waiting. Be mindful of how long you’re using the equipment and respect the gym’s rules.
15. Chatting too much with people mid-workout

It’s great to be friendly, but starting a long conversation with someone who’s clearly in the middle of their workout can be distracting. Keep the chit-chat for after their set or when they’ve finished their session.
16. Wearing inappropriate or revealing clothing

While there’s no strict dress code in most gyms, wearing clothes that are too revealing can make other people uncomfortable. It’s important to wear something you feel comfortable in, but keep in mind that the gym is a shared space.
