Many users ask chatbots to diagnose symptoms, recommend treatments, or give reassurance when they’re worried about their health. It feels quick, private, and convenient, but that trust might be misplaced.

A new study suggests that people are giving AI far more authority than it deserves when it comes to health decisions. The problem isn’t just that the information can be wrong, it’s that users believe it with the confidence they’d give a real doctor. The growing dependence on artificial intelligence for medical guidance could have dangerous consequences, especially when real human expertise is replaced by a machine that doesn’t fully understand what’s at stake.

AI doesn’t actually understand your symptoms.

When you describe what’s wrong to an AI, it’s pattern matching based on data it’s been trained on, not actually understanding your unique situation. It can’t feel what you’re feeling or see the full picture of your health history and current state. That lack of real comprehension means it’s guessing based on probabilities, not diagnosing based on medical expertise. What sounds confident and definitive is actually just statistical likelihood presented as fact.

You’re more likely to believe AI than human doctors.

There’s something about the technology that makes people think it’s more objective or accurate than human expertise. AI might ask about some of this, but it can’t weight it properly or understand how it all connects. A doctor who knows you can spot patterns and make connections that AI would miss entirely. AI doesn’t have medical liability.

When a doctor gives you advice, they’re legally and professionally responsible for that guidance. AI has no accountability, no medical licence to lose, and no consequences if its advice harms you.
