If You Can’t Remember The Last Time You Cleaned These Things, Your House Is Probably Dirty

You might have a routine that covers the basics—hoovering, wiping counters, maybe even changing the sheets when you remember.

Those things are all important and go a long way in keeping a tidy home, but they’re far from everything. It’s amazing the amount of dust, dirt, and grime that get in places you never even consider. With that in mind, if you can’t recall the last time you cleaned these often-forgotten spots, there’s a decent chance your home is a lot grubbier than you think.

1. The kitchen bin lid

Sure, you take the rubbish out regularly, but when was the last time you actually cleaned the lid? You know, the bit you touch every single day with hands that may or may not be covered in who-knows-what. That thing gets splattered, smudged, and silently grows a lovely film of grime over time. Give it a proper wipe, not just a “this’ll do” swipe. It’s one of those little jobs that makes a big difference.

2. Underneath the sofa cushions

We all know things vanish down there, but unless you’ve recently lost the remote or some spare change, chances are you haven’t checked in a while. It’s a black hole of crumbs, lint, and the occasional terrifying mystery item. Even if it looks fine on the surface, the moment you lift those cushions, it’s a whole different world. You’re not just fluffing pillows anymore—you’re spelunking through the debris of your snacks and past decisions.

3. The bottom shelf of your fridge

You might keep the shelves up top sparkling, but let’s be honest—there’s probably something unidentifiable lurking in a plastic container on the bottom shelf. That one weird drip stain? It’s been there since winter. It’s easy to overlook, but that lower fridge shelf collects spills, leaks, and expired condiments like it’s doing it on purpose. Wipe it out before the next wave of groceries moves in and buries the evidence.

4. Your shower curtain (yes, really)

If it’s been hanging there for months—or worse, years—without a wash, it’s probably looking a bit dingy around the edges. Even if it looks okay, it’s quietly collecting mould, soap scum, and mildew. They’re washable, you know. Chuck it in the machine and let it earn its keep. It might not be glamorous, but no one wants to be brushing their clean self up against a bacteria blanket first thing in the morning.

5. Behind the toilet

It’s not a fun job. It’s barely a job most people acknowledge. However, behind the loo is one of those areas that gets surprisingly gross, surprisingly fast—and also never seems to make it into the regular cleaning loop. Dust, hair, drips, and weird fluff gather like they’ve been planning a secret meeting. It doesn’t need a deep scrub every week, but if it’s been months, you’re officially hosting a crime scene back there.

6. The remote controls

Think about it—everyone in the house touches it, usually with snack fingers, maybe even while ill, and it never gets a wipe. It’s basically a public touchscreen, but somehow gets cleaned less than the toilet seat. A quick disinfect now and then wouldn’t go amiss. Especially if your idea of “cleaning the living room” is just fluffing the cushions and hoping no one notices the trail of fingerprints on every surface.

7. The baseboards/skirting boards

You don’t look at them often, which is exactly why they turn into tiny dust collectors no one thinks about. But they’re right there along every wall, quietly holding onto every bit of fluff that’s ever floated by. When you finally get around to wiping them down, it’s both deeply satisfying and slightly horrifying. If you can write your name in the dust, it’s definitely past time to do something about it.

8. The extractor fan cover

Out of sight, out of mind, but it’s literally sucking in steam and grease every time you cook. After a while, that thing turns into a sticky, dust-coated square that’s just begging for attention. All it takes is a quick wipe with hot soapy water, but it’s amazing how many people never even think to check. If it’s starting to look furry or yellow, the cleaning window’s long since passed.

9. The area behind your taps

That little bit between the tap and the wall gets splashy, soapy, and oddly crusty—but unless you’re specifically looking, it rarely gets wiped. It’s prime mould territory if left unchecked. Give it a proper scrub and you’ll feel instantly cleaner just knowing it’s not lurking there anymore. That small line of grime can make even a spotless sink look like it’s given up.

10. Your toothbrush holder

Water drips, toothpaste smears, the occasional rogue hair—it’s all going into that little container and just… staying there. And somehow, it doesn’t get cleaned until it’s basically threatening to grow its own toothbrushes. It’s right next to the sink, easy to rinse, but still often neglected. If you’ve never dumped it out and looked at the bottom, prepare yourself. It’s not for the faint of heart.

11. The washing machine drawer

Weird, right? You’d think the machine that cleans everything else would be clean by default. But that drawer where you pour in detergent? It’s often a neglected corner full of gloopy buildup and mouldy residue. Pull it out, give it a scrub, and marvel at how much better your machine smells afterwards. Plus, your clothes will thank you—even if silently—for not forcing them through a crusty detergent swamp.

12. The top of the fridge

It’s up high, no one sees it, and that’s exactly why it turns into a dust-and-grease wasteland. It’s not just dust up there—it’s sticky, slightly furry dust that’s clinging on for dear life. If you’ve never cleaned it, brace yourself. Wiping that surface might take a little elbow grease, but it instantly upgrades your kitchen’s overall hygiene score, even if no one else knows it happened.

13. Light switches

They get touched every single day, often by multiple people, and yet somehow they’re always skipped during a quick clean. As time goes on, they collect a strange little ring of fingerprints and smudges that no one talks about. They don’t need much—just a quick disinfecting wipe—but if you haven’t cleaned them in a while, chances are they’re quietly disgusting. And now that you’ve thought about it, you’ll start noticing them everywhere.
